I ended 2021 with so much motivation. A quick look at some of my blog posts from that time and you can see how ready I was to start 2022 on a good note. I was setting so many goals for my blog and was planning on romanticizing my life in 2022. However, when January came around, I was hit with so much bad and sad news that all those plans disappeared. I ended up spending a month in bed, unable to do anything I loved. I was in a slump and I needed to figure a way out. Everyone told me I needed a change… a fresh start, and that come from rearranging my bedroom.

Because of how bad the start of the year was, I felt stuck. When I woke up every day, I had no purpose, I was looking at the same room, and I was doing the same mundane tasks. I was definitely not romanticizing my life like I was planning to. So in an attempt to get out of the stupor I was in, I decided to rearrange my room. I moved my furniture, bought a new bookshelf, and changed up the art on my walls.

The results were immediate and wonderful. There is something so simple yet effective about making small changes in your life like rearranging your bedroom. I started doing things I loved again, I returned to the goals I set at the end of last year, and I felt more motivated to run towards my dreams.

Don’t get me wrong, I am not saying rearranging your room will cure depression or get rid of the bad in your life, but it certainly made me feel better for a little while, and that is all we can ask for sometimes. There are so many benefits to changing around your living space, and I felt them first hand.

Anyway, since my little experiment worked for me, I wanted to talk about some tips for rearranging your bedroom. Hopefully, other people can find the same joy that I did.

How Often Should You Rearrange Your Bedroom?

There is no strict answer to the question, “how often should you rearrange your bedroom,” but rearranging your bedroom once or twice a year is a good rule of thumb. Of course, you can rearrange your bedroom any time you want and as often as you want. Or, if you like things to stay the same, you can never rearrange your bedroom. This is all an exercise of joy, so whatever brings you happiness is perfect.

Where Can you Get Ideas for Redoing your Living Space?

Have you decided to rearrange your bedroom, and you are now looking for sources of inspiration? Well, the good news is, there is inspiration literally all around you. Here are a couple of my favorite resources:

  • Pinterest: This is my main source of inspiration for literally everything, but especailly in home decor. I promise you can find the exact aesthetic you are looking for, Pinterest has everything. Search “bedroom layout ideas” and go from there. Let the algorithm take you where it wants to!
  • Home furnishing websites: Websites like Ikea and Wayfair, that sell home furniture, have a lot of images of bedrooms and living spaces. Don’t be afraid you use those images as inspiration for your own place, even if you don’t plan on buying anything!
  • TV/Movies: I am serious, you can get inspiration everywhere. Do you like the feel of the main character’s bedroom in your favorite television show? Steal those ideas!
  • Your friends bedrooms: Steel the layout of your best friend’s bedroom! I’m sure they won’t mind… unless they do!

Ideas for Rearranging Your Bedroom

Let me preface this by saying, I am not an interior designer. When I create my living spaces, I focus on what will work for me and bring me the most peace. So take everything I say with a grain of salt. I just wanted to give some ideas that you can bounce off of when creating your own perfect living space. Here are some of the ideas I use when I choose to rearrange the furniture in my home:

  1. Move your bed to the other side of the room.
  2. Move your desk under the window to get natural light while you work (especially if you work from home).
  3. But all the tall furniture on one side of the room, so you can use the opposite wall for art and picutes.
  4. If you work from home, and your desk is in your bedroom, create a clear distiction between you work space and you relaxation space. Whether it is putting them on opposite sides of the room, or creating a divide with other furniture, this will be super beneficial for your work-life balance.
  5. If you can’t decide between two arrangements of your room, move it one way and live in it for a week. If it doesnt feel right, move it the other way. Furniture can always be moved, don’t get stuck on trying to decide the perfect layout for your bedroom, just go for it!
  6. Don’t worry about what “experts” tell you, rearrange your room in a way that brings you joy, even if it goes againast all the rules on interior design. No one else has to live in your personal living space but you, so don’t cater to anyone else but yourself!

Tips & Tricks to Moving Heavy Furniture

With all the benefits and excitement around rearranging furniture in your living space, you might want to get started as soon as possible. But moving large pieces of furniture is difficult and requires some planning and tools to make it go as smoothly as possible. Here are some tips to moving your large furniture safely and efficiently:

  1. Get some help! You might think you can do it all on your own, and you might be able to, but it will be much safer for you and your furniture if you get a buddy to help you. Having watched my mom break a leg on my desk because she was moving it on her own, I am now a huge proponant of asking a friend or family member for help. Plus, you won’t get as tired, and there is a lower probablity of you throwing out a muscle or joint. So many benefits!
  2. Take breaks often! If you are moving a lot of heavy furniture, make sure you take care of yourself with a lot of breaks. Grab some whater, sit down for a couple of minutes, and catch your breath. Always put yourself first!
  3. Clear your room of unnecessary items and small pieces of furniture! Before moving all my big furniture items with the help of my family, I first removed anything that might get in the way. The small bed side table, the file cabenit, and any other miscellaneous items were temporarily rehomed in the hallway outside my bedroom while I rearranged the furniture.
  4. Use furniture sliders! Another helpful item are furniture sliders, that make moving things like beds and couches much easier. They come in a variety of sizes and all you do is slip them under the legs of your furniture and it makes it 100 times easier to move big furniture. Less chance of breaking any desk legs! You can buy them from Amazon here!

For me, there is no better feeling than a fresh start in my living space. As much as I hate change, the one thing I can tolerate is the rearrangement of my bedroom. I do more than tolerate it, I love it! There is something so exciting about walking into my room and seeing something new and unexpected.

I hope some of these tips and tricks help you create the perfect living space for you as much as they helped me this past month. I am all for making your home your safe space, I want to help as many people as I can create somewhere they feel the most joy.

In the couple of weeks that I have been living in my new bedroom layout, I have already seen a difference in mood and excitement. I am finally working on hobbies I love again. I am also back to working on my blog, something I had shelved for almost the entirety of January.

Sometimes, all we have in life is the pursuit of joy. So my goal for this year is to go for it with all I have. If rearranging my bedroom will get me there, I am all for it.

Yay! I am so glad you found some inspiration! One of the best places to change around is your work space because the sameness of sitting at the same desk every day can become so mundane! Have fun!

I’d love to rearrange and re-do my bedroom but it’s just not big enough and I’ll likely be moving out within the year, so it’s not worth it for me but I’d love to move into somewhere that has a bigger bedroom, so I can get the chance to rearrange every now and again!

Yeah, I understand that completely! One of the reasons I decided to rearrange my bedroom is because my plans to move out in the coming month fell apart abruptly lol! So I needed a change and I realized I was going to be in this room a little longer! Good luck with the move! Moving is basically a chance to rearrange all your furniture in a new space haha!
