I am all about everything spooky this time of year. And I mean everything. I want every part of my life to reflect the spooky. And something else you should know about me, or something you already know, is that I love plants. I think I might have a little bit of an obsession with them if I am being honest. Somebody seriously needs to take my credit card away when I go into a plant or hardware store. I always come back with a new plant baby! My weakness is succulents! (You can see my post about taking care of succulents here!) I literally went into a store the other day, just doing some grocery shopping… and I came out with a snake plant. Seriously, someone stop me!

Anyway, when I found out I could mix spooky with my love of plants, I was thrilled. As soon as I saw the idea for the spooky terrarium I was hooked. I could not get the image of an adorable spooky world in the palm of my hand out of my head. I wasn’t sure how I was going to do it but I knew I really REALLY wanted to.

What is a Cemeterrarium?

I think it was the end of August or early September when I came across a beautiful picture. It was an article on Facebook about how people were creating these tiny cemeteries in their terrariums. Immediately, I took to the internet. I opened my Pinterest app and typed in “cemeterrarium,” and I got a couple of results, but I was a little disappointed. I thought I would have a treasure trove of ideas. So, instead, I looked up “spooky terrarium” on Pinterest, and I got so many more results. Results that emulated what I was actually trying to create.

Basically, a cemeterrarium, or a spooky terrarium, incorporates the plant life of a terrarium with small adorable decorations the make it look like a cemetery. Ever since I was little, I have always loved little things. The tinier the better. Have you ever seen the adorable things they do with doll furniture? Fairy gardens have always been so fun for me because I love seeing all the small decorations hanging out with my plants.

Anyway, it is basically a spooky fairy garden inside of a terrarium. I have never actually had a terrarium, so I knew when I started this that it was going to be a new adventure in a lot of ways.

How did I build the cemeterrarium?

The first thing I did on this journey was to research. I had no idea how to create a good environment for terrarium plants. I didn’t even know what plants would be good in terrariums. So I researched. There were a lot of things involved, like drainage, moss covering, and activated charcoal.

For a little bit, I let the research scare me away. It was a solid month that I decided I wasn’t going to create this because it was too involved, and too expensive. But then I just decided to wing it. I found a small terrarium at Micheal’s craft store, which I used a coupon on, making it 12 dollars. Then I found some decorations there too, and they were on sale for 50% off. At this point, I was back in.

After I got all the supplies I needed from the craft store, I headed straight to a hardware store to look for plants. In all honesty, I didn’t know what plants I should have been looking for, and I still don’t. But I know what plants do well in humid environments so I went for it. I picked up a couple of succulents, some rocks for drainage, and I was ready to put it all together. I had some potting soil at home, and I wasn’t going to worry about the moss and activated charcoal. If my plants look like they aren’t doing well, I can always get terrarium starter kits off the internet to fix it right up. But I was so ready and excited to build it, I couldn’t wait any longer.

How am I liking my Cemeterrarium?

I. Am. LOVING IT!

Seriously, it has been such a good addition to my fall/halloween decor. It is so elegent yet spooky, it is one of my favorite things I have done this year. I hate to say it, but I am really proud of it!

Is it the most beautiful terrarium in the world? No! But that is okay because it is my first one. I am so excited to explore this form of houseplant more. My absolute dream is to get one of the giant ones that look like a house like you can see here. I just wanted to start out small for my first one.

This was one of the crafts that I wanted to complete this fall! I made a whole list of crafts ad DIYs that you can see here. There are a couple of decorations that I still want for it. I think it would be adorable to have a little skeleton inside, rather than the one on top, who was too big for my set up. Or even some bones.

I am also thinking of switching out the decorations for Christmas, to be all adorable with little snowmen. But I haven’t decided on this yet, because I do like to be spooky year-round. We will see!

Let me know in the comments below if you have ever created a terrarium! Do you have any tips for me and my new plant babies?
