I haven’t always been a music person. When I have free time, I’m usually listening to audiobooks or podcasts. The only time I would really listen to tunes would be in the car, and all I would listen to was pop music. But recently, I have been really enjoying taking the time to shut myself away from the world around me and enjoy some music. It has become one of my favorite forms of self-care.

During the summer, I love listening to calming music, something that puts my mind at ease. The summer months are usually my most anxious, so I like to use every method available to me to keep my mind happy. With more music in my life, I have discovered some new and old favorites that help me quiet my mind and shut off the world. Here are some of my favorites this summer!

1. “In Case you Don’t Live Forever by Ben Platt

Album cover of Sing to Me Instead by Ben Platt

This song is one of my top favorites. I had listened to it so many times, but the first time I really sat down and listened to the actual lyrics, I realized how much it reminded me of the relationship I have with my mom. This song will always hold a special place in my heart. Bonus, the whole album is SO GOOD, please listen to it!

2. i love you by Billie Eilish

Album cover of When We all Fall Asleep Where do we Go by Billie Eilish

I absolutely adore Billie Eilish. She has so much talent for the creation and formation of music, it is incredible. Honestly, I have been listening to her whole album this summer, but this one especially fills me with all those cozy and wonderful feelings.

3. Burning Ground by Brandon Jenner

Album cover of Bruning Grounds by Brandon Jenner

This is just one of those songs that I loved the second I heard it. I immediately put it into my “discoveries” playlist. It just has a vibe that just matches up with me.

4. maybe, i’m afraid by lovelytheband

I love lovelytheband. I got the privilege of seeing them live last summer and ever since, I have been obsessed with their music. It is something you can move to, with clever lyrics and an easy melody. Their album has been one of my favorite things to jam to this summer.

5. I Lost a Friend by FINNEAS

Album cover of Blood Harmony by Finneas

This song absolutely destroyed me. I can’t think of another song that speaks on friendship, which makes this so unique. Losing a friend can be so difficult and Finneas encapsulates that feeling perfectly in this song. I just want to scream these lyrics out while driving down the highway.

6. Before You Go by Lewis Capaldi

Album cover of Divinely Uninspired to a Hellish Extend by Lewis Capaldi

Lewis Capaldi is quickly becoming a major force in music. He has a unique voice that portrays emotions so well through music, and this song is no exception. This is another song I would happily scream out the lyrics in my car.

7. Lost by Dermot Kennedy

Album cover of Without Fear by Dermot Kennedy

I have been loving the vibe of Dermot Kennedy’s music. It is incredibly unique and interesting, and unlike anything I have listened to. I just want to close my eyes and move to this music.

8. Saturn by Sleep at Last

Album cover of Atlas by Sleep at Last

Sleep at Last has always been on my list. They create music that is so easy to dance to (I’m a dancer), and I can’t help but get up and move to this song. It is calming and quiets my often way too loud mind.

9. I Found by Amber Run

Album cover of 5 A.M. by Amber Run

Although I haven’t listened to much else from Amber Run, I Found was definitely a stand out for me. The slow tempo immediately helps slow my mind and heart rate. It is a wonderful song to listen to with your eyes closed, lying in bed.

10. Icarus by Bastille

Album cover of Bad Blood by Bastille

Bastille! Bastille is one of my favorite bands, I love very song they put out. Icarus has such an interesting story, discussing the myth of Icarus. The lyrics are interesting, the musical patterns are interesting. I love it.

If you can tell, I like a lot of mellow, sometimes melancholy music. This is a playlist to quiet my frantic mind. Some of these songs make me move, some of them are better for laying in bed and staring at my ceiling, but all of them have been the playlist to my summer.

Summer can be such a hectic time for people, sometimes music can help us slow down and enjoy the season we are in. Or, if you usually have slow, calm summers, music can help us stay in the pocket, enjoying your time off. Whatever mood you are in, music can transform us. This is the beauty and magic of art!
